Early Tanning Practices: People in ancient times — including the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians — would apply mixtures similar to tanning oils before sitting in the sun for hours. That’s right: whether or not they were aware of it, they’d give themselves a good roast to darken their skin.

Discovery of DHA: In the 1920s, researchers found a colorless sugar called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that reacts with amino acids on the skin’s surface to create a tan-like color. The substance was initially used as an X-ray dye until two decades later when Eva Wittgenstein noticed her skin turned brown after spilling it on herself.

First Commercial Products: The 1960s introduced the first batch of commercial sunless tanning products. ‘Man-Tan’ was one of those, and its name says it all. Those early sunless tanners lacked good formulas which resulted in streaky orange skin but they were the stepping stones for many more to come in the future.

Improvements in Formula: By the time we got to the 80s, better formulas were developed that provided a more natural look upon application. The industry expanded rapidly from there with many innovations leading to higher quality products and reliable outcomes.
